The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) cash transfer program has had a positive impact on the enrollment and retention of girls in primary and secondary schools in Zamfara and Sokoto states.
Bodinga Local Government Area Education Secretary Lawal Naakka Muazu, who revealed this when answering questions from reporters in his office, said the idea of cash transfers to women encouraged parents to support girls’ education in all states.
According to him, most of the parents used the money to raise pets to raise the economic level of the whole family and effectively sponsor the study of girls.
Muazu said UNICEF’s intervention had a huge impact on girls’ schooling in the local government area.
Earlier, UNICEF Education Officer at the Sokoto Field Office, Miriam Mereso, said that UNICEF support had greatly contributed to increasing the enrollment of students, especially girls in schools. Sokoto and Zamfara States.
“There is more awareness than ever about the enrollment and retention of girls in primary and secondary school,” she pointed out.
In her goodwill message, UNICEF Field Officer in charge of Sokoto, Marya Darshe, said the GEP 3 intervention program is focused on middle and high schools.
According to her, the program aimed to improve learning and transitions for adolescent girls through curricular and extracurricular activities.
Maryam acknowledged the role of traditional leaders, HiLWA, mothers’ groups in enrolling, retaining and transporting girls to schools.
In his address, the Executive Chairman of the Universal Basic Education Council of Sokoto State, Altine Shehu Kajiji, reiterated the council’s determination to mobilize for the enrollment of more women in schools.
He said SUBEB in partnership with UNICEF trained and retrained primary school teachers for better performance.
Kajiji further disclosed that Koranic schools are also incorporated into the girls’ education curriculum.
