Mr. Dem explained that beneficiary registration is done digitally using tablets. “We are confident that once the registration process is completed, the next step, i.e. the cash transfer, will be a success, as the issues regarding the ID cards of the beneficiaries will have been resolved.
Furthermore, he pointed out that to register the beneficiaries, the primary beneficiary and the procreator of each household must present a valid photo ID such as (national ID card, voter card, driver’s license or passport ) for the registration process.
The Nafa program component of the Gambia Social Safety Net Project (a $31 million project) is jointly funded by the World Bank and the Government of The Gambia.
The National Nutrition Agency (NaNA), the Directorate of Social Welfare and the Department of Community Development are implementing the Nafa program under the Gambia Social Safety Net Project (SSNP) which aims to strengthen coordination social assistance activities, the inclusion of extremely poor people in the Nafa program and strengthening the resilience of the most vulnerable in society.
The Nafa program is a combination of cash transfers and social and behavior change communication (SBCC) that is implemented in phases.
The first phase involved three districts (Foni Bintang in the West Coast region, Nianija in the Central River region and Wulli West in the Upper River region.) The project is currently being rolled out in 17 other districts across the country.
The project targets 15,606 extremely poor households, which equates to approximately 40% of extremely poor households in The Gambia. The project targets the 20 poorest districts in The Gambia.
The Project Development Objective (PDO) is to improve the coordination of social assistance activities, provide temporary social assistance support to households in rural Gambia, as well, COVID-19 and improve the inclusion of marginalized households in the country in the Nafa program.

Amie Ndow, a beneficiary of Dibba Kunda Wollof, said the project would bring peace and unity among families due to the likelihood of violence in households with little or no means to provide three square meals for the family.
NdeyFaal, also a beneficiary in Dibba Kunda Wollof, urged the beneficiaries not to spend the entire amount lightly, but to establish a small business and other meaningful activities before the end of the project, as the objective of the project is lift beneficiary households out of extreme poverty.
