Lagos government introduces online payment for cash transfer recipients

The Lagos State Government has said that poor and vulnerable conditional cash transfer recipients will now be paid through their banks’ online digital account system.

Wealth Creation and Jobs Commissioner Ms Yetunde Arobieke made this known on Thursday when distributing debit cards and activation pins to beneficiaries at Agege.

She said, “I am delighted that CCT beneficiaries in Lagos State have received the bi-monthly cash stipends from this scheme.

“The program is beginning the full digitization of its payment processes. This digitized method will use an online system of digital accounts (Nigeria Uniform Bank Account Numbers) opened by licensed payment service providers such as commercial banks, microfinance banks, payment service banks and money operators mobile. This arrangement has become necessary to further ensure and strengthen transparency, accountability and integrity in the delivery of program benefits to beneficiaries.

Arobieke added that the CCT was an initiative developed by the federal government and the World Bank.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria, in partnership with the World Bank, established a National Social Safety Nets Project which has played a pivotal role in helping to end extreme poverty and promote shared prosperity with a view to improve the lives of citizens through the provision of access to targeted transfers to poor and vulnerable households,” she said.
